FAQ

Can decorative techniques be used in the bathroom?

Yes, decorations can be created in any room, including the bathroom. This is possible because we use materials that are inherently highly resistant to damage and dirt, and then apply special coatings and emulsions to make them water-repellent. Decorative techniques can be used on bathroom walls, floors and even in the shower, for example.

We recently painted the walls in the apartment. Will this hinder decorating?

If you painted the walls, there is nothing wrong with that. We will protect them, apply a suitable pre-coating and create a decoration you have chosen.

Can you decorate the walls in an apartment that is already furnished?

Not only is this not a problem, it is an advantage, because the style of the furniture should match the decorations. Our advice in the case of new apartments is that they should be furnished before we do any decorating. If there is already furniture in your apartment, it will make it easier to find out what decoration is suitable. There are no problems with the actual implementation either – we will move the furniture only as much as needed for unhindered access to the walls.

Is it possible to wipe a decorated wall without damage?

Walls are in most cases decorated with materials that allow wiping. However, if the need for cleaning and wiping is greater, all walls can be protected with a special varnish to ensure that they are not damaged.

Does the decoration need to be scraped off the wall if you get tired of it and no longer want it?

When you want to redecorate, the existing decoration doesn’t need to be scraped off or removed in any way. If the decoration has some structure, we carry out smoothing, fill in any gaps and paint the wall. Walls that were decorated using thin-layer paint are simply painted in the desired colour.

I have an original idea for wall decoration. Can you do it?

We can make almost anything within the limits of the physical laws and materials available :). Since we are creative at heart, very original ideas are a special challenge for us – and we never shy away from obstacles. We will discuss your idea together and certainly find a way to make it happen.

How and where can I choose the most suitable decoration for the apartment?

You can choose a decoration that you have noticed somewhere yourself – say on the website, in a restaurant, business premises or at the home of your friends. You can also let your interior designer or architect decide. Once you find an exciting decoration, visit our showroom to explain your idea and we will tell you how it could be done. To help our discussion, we will use our sample panels, which can be related to your idea and are also a great approximation of the final appearance of the wall. Besides samples, you can also pick a colour from the catalogue. If your wish is highly atypical, we will make a sample in the desired technique and colour especially for you.

Are wall decorations expensive?

Naturally, wall decorating is more expensive than regular painting, but the decoration also has a much bigger impact on a room than regular wall paint. It is a professionally demanding product that is carefully executed down to the last detail, and due to its creative input, it is often a real work of art. Wall decorations differ greatly in price depending on the technique of implementation and the material used. At Penzel, we always work with our customers to find a price that is acceptable.

Is it necessary to maintain the decorations on the walls in any way?

No special maintenance is necessary – they need the same amount of care as regular wall paint or less. If a decoration gets dirty, cleaning is even easier than with most basic paints – the surface is easy to clean without removing the paint coating or otherwise damaging the decoration.

How long do wall decorations last?

Our decorations are made using the highest quality materials, which are significantly more durable than regular paint. We later refreshed quite a few rooms where we performed the decoration technique – since there was no need to restore the decoration, we protected it from getting dirty and repainted the other walls normally. We are sure that when refreshing your rooms, you will replace the decorations last.

Can decorative concrete or mikrotopings be used in the bathroom?

Yes, imitation concrete or mikrotopings can be applied in the bathroom, and this is also an increasingly popular choice. This allows you to avoid grout joints, which are the biggest disadvantage of tiles – over time, dirt begins to accumulate in them, resulting in unattractive joints that are usually difficult to clean. This technique is made possible by the use of modern materials and can be applied both on walls and floors.

What is the difference between natural stone and imitation stone – does the latter have any advantages?

There are many differences between natural stone and imitation stone. Due to its natural composition, it is not possible to fully alter the colour and structure of natural stone. The natural stone is also significantly harder to install. And if you grow tired of it after a while, the wall needs to be reconstructed in order to remove it. In addition to the above, imitation stone offers several other advantages: you can choose the colour yourself (the stone can also be multicolored), the entire wall gains a monolithic appearance (i.e. is completely without grout joints), and only 3 mm is needed to apply the technique, meaning that it takes up very little space. And if you ever want to get rid of your imitation stone, we can simply smooth and sand the layer and the wall will be ready for a new decoration.

Are imitations of wood generally of such quality that they resemble real wood?

Imitation wood can be done very authentically. A customer who does not know that it is an imitation will usually think it is real wood when entering the room. Imitation wood can be very elegant and smooth like treated and varnished wood, or it can look like a raw, untreated, time-worn wooden beam.

Is it possible to create the appearance of rust on a wooden and glass base?

Any technique can be applied to practically any base. We have already designed the appearance of rust to many different bases, including aluminium and plastic, and often also on a wooden base in collaboration with a carpenter. It is a matter of our expertise to ensure the material adheres properly to the base and does not peel.

I want a special, one-of-a-kind decoration, but I’m not creative enough. Can you find an idea for me?

Of course, gladly. Tell us about what you are looking for, what style and colours you like and what kind of furniture you have in the room. Together, we will take a look at some of the existing ideas to see what direction you might want to take. After that, we will fully engage our creative drive to create for you a decoration that you will like!

How to prepare a wall for painting?

Before a wall is painted, it needs to be dry and clean. It should be free from any dust particles that might prevent the paint from adhering to the base or wall. There must also be no crumbling parts or chipped plaster or whitewash on the wall. Before painting, it is recommended to coat the wall with acrylic emulsion to allow even absorption of the paint.

How do ceiling and wall painting differ?

There is not much difference in painting the ceiling or a wall – the same material is used in both cases. It should be noted, though, that the ceiling is somewhat more difficult to paint, as the feeling of applying the paint is different than on the wall.

How to combine colours when painting walls?

When painting walls, it is better not to use too dark colour tones, as the room will appear smaller. Of course, it all depends on the size of the room that you intend to paint. If you opt for a darker colour tone, you may choose one wall to paint in that tone and paint the rest in a lighter shade of the same color. This way, the whole room will be in the same colour, but in several different shades, which creates a pleasant effect.

What should you pay attention to before painting the walls?

Before you start painting, make sure that the ceiling or wall you are going to paint is as empty as possible. Remove pictures, posters and souvenirs – temporarily store items and put them back only after painting. Thoroughly protect the floor and other furniture with tape and film so that paint does not drip on the parquet or cabinet.

Does humidity affect freshly painted walls?

Humidity is a constant problem, especially in older apartment buildings and houses, mostly on the northern side of the apartment. If you notice traces of mould on the wall, which are usually dark in colour, you need to remove them first. Remove the surface mould by wiping it with a damp cloth and then wait for the wall to dry before applying a mould remover to the wall. You can paint the wall only after it has been coated.

How to choose the most appropriate colour for wall painting?

All colours are suitable for painting the apartment. The colour you like is the right colour. However, it is true that the rooms differ, which means that in some rooms the same shade of color has a completely different effect than in others.

Does the light in the room affect the choice of colour for painting?

Light affects the choice of colour very much. If the room is big and bright, you can also choose a darker color. In smaller rooms with less daylight, the same colour (or a brighter one even) might appear darker than in a bigger and brighter room.

What does the price of painting the apartment depend on?

First and foremost, the price of painting the apartment depends on its size – the bigger the apartment, the lower the price. It also depends on the number of colour combinations – if the ceiling and the walls will be white, work will be done faster than if the ceiling will be white, one wall red and the rest will be green. The price also depends on how much protection is needed – its price can vary widely, as it is different if the apartment is occupied or completely without furniture.
